What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of exercises that effectively strengthens, stretches, and aligns the entire body created by Joseph H. Pilates. The Pilates apparatus utilizes spring tension along with pulleys to create resistance in a unique way. Some of the benefits that you will see from a regular practice include: better posture, tightened core/buttocks, and increased energy.
Pilates was a gymnast and bodybuilder, professional boxer, circus-performer, and self defense trainer at police schools and Scotland Yard. British authorities interned him during WWI along with other German citizens where he taught wrestling and self-defense. It was here that he began refining and teaching his minimal equipment system of mat exercises that later became "Contrology." He studied yoga and the movements of animals and trained his fellow inmates in fitness.
Joseph Pilates immigrated to the United States and opened his gym in New York City in the late 1920s. Popularity grew, first among the dance and performing arts communities, and eventually reached the general public. Doctors referred patients to Pilates to rehabilitate injuries with great success. He taught until his death in 1967 at the age of 83.
